Gainsborough's House is in the centre of town (Gainsborough Street), and it dates back to around 1500. The house retains most of it's original features. The Georgian facade was built by Thomas Gainsborough's father in the eighteenth-century.
In 2005 Gainsborough's House museum began a much needed refurbishment programme. The project was supported by the 'Heritage Lottery Fund' and included a newly installed lift, improved lighting and environmental controls. On completion of the project this summer (2006), the whole house will have had redecoration and general repair. The benefits of the work carried out include more gallery space than there was previously and greater access to the fine collection of artwork on display.
